This is HOT off the press!Just returned from the public ceilidh (kay-lee) at the music hall!Awesome!!!! This would be my fourth ceilidh since i've been to aberdeen and man do i have a great time every time. yup...and it was to celebrate my friend's Dana's 29th birthday...which happens to fall on valentines day.....hahaha! It's great for single frens like me!For those of you still in the dark, ceilidh is the traditional scottish dance. Lotsa traditional dances like strip the willow (my ultimate fave!), the dashing seargeant, boston 2 step...and the oxo dance. yes mates, OXO...(the stuff i use to make beef stew with) hahaah....read on to find out more about this delicious dance.Great ceilidh band playing as well. Glaswegian lead through and through...aye nae bothered 'bout dae accent mate we jus triein to hafe a goood time now.... ( you just can't type it....it has all those little confusing innuendos and lilts)haha....now the OXO dance is a new one. Never danced this in the past. Basically you have 5 couples and after the first 16 beats of stomp stomp stomp and all that, the top two and bottom two couples join hands to form a circle whilst the middle two couple form a star with their hands...so if you're good at picturing this you get an OXO....smashing!but man...did they make us dance, twirl, stomp, run, squat everything. yeah...and of course some twists and sprains along the way but it was ALL GOOD!I actually love ceilidh dancing. It's fun, it's informal, it's all about getting to know pple, even if it's just for that fleeting second when you are in each others arms....it's great! oh yeah...and i do think that public ceilidh are more fun than uni ceilidhs. Why?1) You get to meet new pple2) it's more challenging and risky because you squeeze 500 pple into a music hall with a dance floor about 2/3 of a basketball court3) You can make a fool out of yourself and nobody cares because we're all there to have a good time4) It's better looking crowd out there folks! The bonnie, handsome strapping lads prancing away in their outrageously short kilts and open chested tops. And you've hit the potluck when the one you've set your eyes on dances with you. hahaha! I don't care wat the critics say..I don't care what other societies and cultures say.....I certainly want to beat sense into the fools who say that it's sissy for guys to wear skirts.First...their not skirts...their kilts....manly skirts. Second....it's the most formal outfit you get over here, and when complete with blazer, vest, knee high socks and leather shoes as well as ther skeeindoo ( pouch thingy that hangs from the waist) it is the most sophisticated and highly flattering outfit a guy can have on...even better than a tux. Seriously. Third...They actually look more manly when their decked out in a kilt. You have to see it to believe it. honest.haha....so all in all....it was a great night. ALthough i regretted wearing a skirt because the walk home was terrible with the freaking aberdonian wind blowing through town. But hey! it's all part of the experience!!!Cheers!
