Watched 'Hello Broadway' this evening at the Esplanade. Had some rather interesting seats: Gallery Seats. Haha...so basically 70% of what I heard was the orchestra ( compromised of members from the SSO ) and the other 30% was a smattering of voices.
Well, I must say those seats were rather cool coz we were able to observe the orchestra at such close quarters and the butts of the performers. hehe. But the best thing was that we were part of the performance. Nono! the best thing about the evening's performance was that I was blocked by the blasted chimes. Yes....that's how close we were to the orchestra. Too close for comfort. Literally.
Well, but I must say that although the orch was kinda like a distraction from the main focus on the singers it was rather nice to get that feel of being on stage and making music with pals once again. The percussionists were really feeling it man! rock on! Unfortunately, there were onli a couple of songs where the audience too were feeling it.
The performers were ahem...good in every negative sense. It wasn't an exhilarating experience. The asian singers had accents that were too affected. Dina Morishita totally killed 'On my own' from Les Miserables. She sounded as though her girdle was so tight she just had to squeak. Welly Yang, humiliated Phantom of the Opera. Judi and the other guy just managed to save the show. Sigh...A handful of people seated at the gallery came in midway through the first song. I have nothing to say. Pple if you wanna noe wat I think abt such pple...go look at my previous articles.
yup so all in all it was a lukewarm performance with tepid response. No encores were requested so if I were the performer i'd feel devastated haha....wat with calling the audience 'the most good-looking audience' in the world. guess with the Singaporean audience you have to give more in the bribe. yup so the orchestra forlornly sat there waiting for cries of encore and bravo but well....all they got was the dissipation of the audience. So in the end the performers had no choice but to come back on stage, thank the orchestra and lead them out. Sad...and they were so much better than the performers. Well, granted, the pianist cum conductor was cool. He sure had magic fingers, really working it across the keyboard. He could sing too! Never thought I would like be-bop and rag time so much!
haha....yup so well that was the performance. To me the limelight fell on the wrong people. Then again....it's not too unusual.
